CenterPoint Energy is responsible for maintaining the natural gas pipes that deliver natural gas to the meter at your home or building. You are responsible for maintaining the natural gas lines from the meter to the natural gas-burning appliances throughout your home and property – indoors and outdoors, above and below ground. Don't forget that you may have gas lines extending to yard lights, grills, pool heaters, and garage or workshop heaters.
If there is a distance of more than three feet between the meter and your home, CenterPoint Energy monitors only the primary pipeline for corrosion and leaks. However, you are still responsible for repairs on these lines.
Any natural gas piping not monitored by CenterPoint Energy should be inspected annually for leaks, and metal pipes should also be monitored for corrosion. If natural gas pipes become corroded or leak, you could have a potentially dangerous and costly situation.
To have your pipes inspected, contact an HVAC contractor. For a small, monthly fee, some contractors offer programs that cover repairs, materials and labor and provide a guarantee should you ever have a problem.
