Saving Energy with Natural Gas VehiclesNatural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) are helping to fuel the future of transportation.   That’s because NGVs run cleaner and cost less to operate than gasoline, diesel or other alternative fueled vehicles. 

With over 110,000 NGVS on U.S. roads today and 11 million world-wide, more and more businesses and consumers are clearly turning to NGVs as the solution to their needs for clean, cost-effective transportation solutions.

Did you know?

  • Fueling stations: There are more than 1,200 NGV fueling stations in the U.S., in addition to 73 liquefied natural gas (LNG) stations that are public and private.
  • Re-fueling: The re-fueling process for NGVs is very similar to gasoline vehicles, but it can also be accomplished from a home fueling station.
  • Model availability: In the U.S., about 50 manufacturers produce 100 models of light- medium- and heavy-duty natural gas vehicles and engines. There are both commercial and consumer NGVs available -- from sedans and vans- to bus fleets and long-haul semi-trucks.
  • Financial incentives: Federal and state incentives may be available to offset the initial higher costs of purchasing NGVs, and future fuel cost savings should be factored in.
  • Cost savings: Natural gas costs, on average, one-third less than conventional gasoline at the pump.
  • Environmental benefits: NGVs are 30 percent cleaner than those that run on traditional gasoline or diesel. Carbon monoxide emissions are reduced by 70 to 90 percent and carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by 20 to 30 percent. Plus, even noise pollution is reduced, as NGVs operate at an 80 to 90 percent lower decibel level than diesel fueled vehicles
  • Energy content: Natural gas is sold in gasoline gallon equivalents (GGE). A GGE has the same energy content (125,000 BTUs), as a gallon of gasoline without ethanol.
  • Dual fuel systems: A dual fuel system uses a diesel engine with additional hardware. The diesel fuel ignites and the diesel combustion causes the natural gas to burn. Natural gas replaces diesel with a 50 to 70 percent substitution rate.
  • Bi-fuel systems: With the natural gas bi-fuel system, a natural gas conversion kit is added to a vehicle with no major modifications to the vehicle's system. The vehicle will operated on either natural gas or gasoline/diesel.
