Where Natural Gas Comes From

Natural gas was formed millions of years ago through this process:

  • Organic matter, made up of billions of dead plants and animals, slowly accumulated on the bottom of oceans that covered most of the earth.
  • Mud and sand buried the decaying organic matter. In time, this mud and sand turned to rock, compacting the decaying material even further.
  • Tremendous pressure from the overlying rock plus the earth's heat converted the organic matter into fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas.

Natural gas is produced here, in the United States

Today large quantities of natural gas are trapped under the surface of the earth, especially in areas close to prehistoric mountain ranges. Approximately 87% of the natural gas used in the United States is produced in this country; most of the rest comes from Canada.
