CenterPoint Energy is installing smart electric meters for all 2 million residential and appropriate business electric delivery customers by mid 2012.  Smart meters provide significant potential benefits for consumers and the environment:
  • Remote meter reading
  • Remote service connection/disconnection
  • Automatic power outage notification
  • Energy efficiency and savings
  • New retail products and services
  • Home Area Networks

Installations began in central Houston and will move outward based on meter-reading routes. To find out when you'll get your meter, click here.  By entering your service address or ESI ID (a 17- or 22-digit number on your electric bill), you'll be given a 90-day range in which to expect your meter.  The exact date of installation cannot be predetermined since weather, meter accessibility (i.e. locked gates, dogs), billing blackout windows and other factors can affect when a meter is installed.

The Smart Meter Schedule Lookup Tool also allows you to register for e-mail updates including a reminder 30 days before the start of your installation period, periodic updates on smart meters and their benefits, and energy efficiency tips.
