MINNEAPOLIS – December 19, 2013 – CenterPoint Energy recently awarded Robbinsdale’s School of Engineering and Arts at Olson Elementary (SEA) with certificates and a monetary gift card for helping make holiday cards for recipients of the Metro Meals on Wheels (MOW) program and The Salvation Army. MOW aims to help home bound clients receive the nutritious meals and human connection they need to help them live independently. The Salvation Army ensures basic needs are met for those in need. Together, these organizations help those who need groceries, assistance paying bills and with long term aid solutions. The holiday cards will be distributed by CenterPoint Energy to MOW clients along with natural gas energy assistance and conservation messages this holiday season.
“Each year, we try to teach our students what is like to walk in other shoes. This year, we are teaching our children about empathy at SEA. Working with CenterPoint Energy on a shared goal to help the Metro Meals on Wheels program and The Salvation Army programs provided our school with the exact synergy we were seeking,” said Kim Hiel, principal of SEA. “We appreciate the opportunity to educate our students about empathy and appreciate the certificates and monetary gift that we plan to use to purchase science supplies to further enhance the brilliant minds of our children.”
Suzanne Pierazek, manager of Corporate Community Relations added, “We are proud of our relationship with Volunteers in Partnership (VIP) who connected us with the students at SEA. CenterPoint Energy has partnered with VIP since 2009 in Robbinsdale Area School District. We also learned from Principal Hiel that the school shares our energy conservation goals as well as community involvement. The school is planning a ‘Power-down Day’ in the near future to help their students understand how to save energy and money and reduce their carbon footprint. We couldn’t be more proud of this talented group of students and staff. ”
