Houston-area electricity consumers can save and win big by being the Biggest Energy Saver
Compete for energy-efficient appliances or cash using smart meter information

HOUSTON – July 11, 2012 – Consumers in the Houston area whose electricity is delivered by CenterPoint Energy can help the state-wide effort to reduce electricity consumption during peak periods and compete for valuable prizes in the Biggest Energy Saver consumer contest and sweepstakes.

Contest entrants will compete by reducing their monthly electricity usage this July, August, and/or September compared to similar periods in 2011 while using information from their smart meter. Up to five finalists in the Houston area will be selected based on the greatest percentage decrease in electricity usage for a chance to win energy-saving appliances or cash up to $7,500.

Consumers can also enter the Lighten Your Load Sweepstakes. Sweepstakes entrants will be asked to reduce their electricity usage during critical peak demand periods from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on randomly selected days. During the Sweepstakes Period, there will be random cash drawings, and entrants can earn points for a chance to win prizes like kitchen appliances, wireless thermostats and energy monitors, or cash for home improvements.

During last year’s Biggest Energy Saver consumer contest, registered participants competed by using smart meter data to reduce their electricity consumption. With the help of data from his smart meter, local resident Mike Butler used an in-home energy monitor and the Smart Meter Texas portal to track his overall electric usage and the use of certain appliances.

“As Texas made history last summer with record-breaking heat, Mike and our other winners reduced their energy consumption,” said Kenny Mercado, CenterPoint Energy senior vice president responsible for smart grid technology. “We are confident that by using smart meters and performing energy-saving measures, consumers can help the Texas grid make it through what looks to be another scorching summer.”

Those interested in entering must register at, where they can also read the complete rules, terms and conditions. Entrants must be 18 or older at the time of entry and must have lived in their current metered residence since at least
June 1, 2011, to be eligible. Entrants must also be customers in the CenterPoint Energy electric service area with an installed and provisioned smart meter. Registration began June 20; the contest ends September 30, 2012, and the sweepstakes ends September 21, 2012. All Biggest Energy Saver contest and sweepstakes winners will be announced by late fall 2012.

The Biggest Energy Saver campaign’s contests and giveaways are sponsored by GRID 21, a non-profit organization committed to encouraging electricity consumers to use a new generation of tools and technologies to better manage their electricity consumption. CenterPoint Energy; along with Oncor, a north Texas electric utility,  and technology partners Itron and Landis+Gyr all helped create the Biggest Energy Saver campaign.
