Little Rock resident recognized as finalist for national volunteerism award

HOUSTON – September 19, 2012 – Alberta Martin, a CenterPoint Energy business process representative and Little Rock, Ark. resident, was recently honored as an outstanding volunteer finalist at the annual Jefferson Awards national ceremony.

The Jefferson Awards are a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America, presented on both a national and local level. Martin has volunteered in a number of ways in the Little Rock community, through both personal commitments and at CenterPoint Energy-sponsored community activities.

“What I like most about volunteering is knowing that I have inspired someone to begin to have a better life in some small way,” said Martin. “I see my volunteer services as an investment in the lives of young people, the community and society as a whole.”

Martin’s passion lies in working with young students to help them obtain the resources needed to pursue a college education. Through her church, she started a computer lab and mentoring program. She also has provided about $4,000 in “Book Awards” through CenterPoint Energy GIVE (Grant Incentives for Volunteer Employees) grants and helped purchase school uniforms for students in need. In all, she has written proposals and grants for more than $10,000 to help students from disadvantaged communities pursue higher education.

Volunteering over the years fueled Martin’s ambition to earn a Master of Science degree in Behavior Human Service Counseling in 2011. She hopes to form a nonprofit organization to help guide young people and their parents toward resources for a college education.

“Last year, CenterPoint Energy employees and retirees, along with family and friends, amassed a staggering 235,847 volunteer hours,” said Diane Hasell, Community Relations senior director for CenterPoint Energy. “We’re extremely proud to have generous and compassionate employees like Alberta who are so willing to serve in their local communities.”
