Requirements

Solar inverters convert direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) and synchronize with CenterPoint Energy's system frequency. They should disconnect upon system voltage loss such that there is no voltage at the breaker panel. A failure of the inverter to disconnect will result in overload and cause fuses to blow or electronic equipment to fail.

Wind turbines use inverters that have the same characteristics as solar inverters. As with solar inverters, they disconnect from the breaker panel upon system voltage loss. However, most packaged designs stop the blades. All new installations must conform to current applicable Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) standards and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing.

The AC disconnect switch should be a lockable external handle, visible disconnect switch installed within 10 feet of CenterPoint Energy's meter. Manufacturer specifics for the machine (or inverter) and disconnect switch are necessary for review. Depending on actual conditions at the site, modifications to the CenterPoint Energy system may be required, at the customer's expense, to accommodate the interconnection. The determination of any modification costs or study fees would be detailed in the report of CenterPoint Energy's review.
