Volunteerism is woven into the fabric of our company, as our efforts continue to show each and every year. In 2012, our employees, retirees and their families and friends contributed 243,313 hours of volunteer time. These hours are valued at more than $5.3 million, according to the Independent Sector, but they are invaluable to the individuals who benefit from them and the employees who experience the pleasure of giving back.
Volunteerism is an important initiative to CenterPoint Energy and its employees, and has long been at the core of the company's culture. While some of our involvement in the community is driven by the company, much is driven by individuals who commit their personal time to causes they find worthy. Created in 1984, CenterPoint Energy's volunteer program unifies the wide ranging community service activities and projects of our employees.
