Summary: Students will receive a brief introduction to the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, as well as some of electricity's basic characteristics. An overview of natural gas safety, including that related to pipelines, is offered. Then, using an "Electric Hazard Hamlet" simulator model, the speaker will take students on an electrical safety "tour", explaining a series of indoor and outdoor situations that could pose a danger to personal safety. The presenter will help students understand how electricity behaves and what to do to maintain their safety in each situation. (This presentation is intended to supplement students' study of basic electricity, so it is offered either to 4th, 5th or 6th grade classes--depending on the preference of the district, private or parochial school.)

Summary: The Intelligent Grid represents technology of the future and it’s coming to the Houston area. Since this will impact the lives of high school students in a variety of ways, they should be interested in learning more about it. Our presentation discusses the project from its inception to the promises it offers for future development and expansion. In addition, we discuss job opportunities and what students will need to qualify for them. The presentation can easily be presented in a 45 minute class period, allowing ample opportunity for Q&A with the students.

Summary: Volunteers stress the need for students to remain on a rigorous curriculum track in order to graduate with skills needed to succeed in life. Speakers talk about changes in the global economy and what students will encounter when they enter the world of work. Strong technical and employability ("soft") skills are essential. Speakers outline student’s options after high school and the types of jobs available for young adults, depending on level of postsecondary education/training. Students are introduced to a variety of forms of financial aid that can make post-secondary education affordable. They are encouraged to take college-level academic or technical courses while they are still in high school.
