Summary: In this 16-page booklet from the "Math at Work" series, a young electrical engineer, Amanda Waters, plans how she will provide electricity to an outdoor concert. To solve Amanda's problems, students work in teams and apply math skills learned through the fifth grade (including spatial reasoning, area measurements, unit conversions, percentages, numeration, data analysis and simple algebra). They size and lay out the concert site, estimate attendance and parking needs and determine how much electricity and how many generators will be needed. Along the way, students also learn about electrical circuits and safety.

Summary: Students will receive a brief introduction to the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, as well as some of electricity's basic characteristics. An overview of natural gas safety, including that related to pipelines, is offered. Then, using an "Electric Hazard Hamlet" simulator model, the speaker will take students on an electrical safety "tour", explaining a series of indoor and outdoor situations that could pose a danger to personal safety. The presenter will help students understand how electricity behaves and what to do to maintain their safety in each situation.
