Busy hands clear the way for endangered plants

Hermann ParkHouston volunteers Sparkle Anderson (left), communication specialist, Joseph Hinojosa (middle) and Marilyn Neuenfeldt (right), service consultant at the Spring Branch Service Center, took part in Hermann Park’s removal project to rid the grounds of invasive plants and make room for endangered prairie grasses. The cleanup was part of National Public Lands Day, the country’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance parks, forests and other shared lands. Workers spent several hours clearing baccharis and Chinese tallow, which threaten native species and wildlife nesting.
