Volunteers serve up fun by the slice

Watermelon FestivalFor the sixth consecutive year, employees were on hand to slice and serve watermelon to Hope (Ark.) Watermelon Festival visitors. The three-day event, which dates back to the 1920s, draws tens of thousands of visitors to Hempstead County for games, arts and crafts, an antique car show and plenty of watermelon, some tipping the scales at 200 pounds. Fourteen CNP volunteers worked the Friday night shift, carving slices of watermelon that sold for $1.25 each. Proceeds benefitted the Hope Chamber of Commerce.
