The City of Shreveport was founded by the Shreve Town Company in 1836, incorporated as a town in 1839 and incorporated as a city in 1871 (Louisiana became the 18th state on April 30, 1812).

Captain Henry Miller Shreve, commanding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, cleared the Red River of a 180-mile-long raft of debris in the 1830s, opening the area for commerce. Shreveport is named in his honor.
