Service Consultant manages installation of underground electric distribution facilities

Name: Brandon
Title: Service Consultant
Years with company: 3
What educational/employment path led you to CenterPoint Energy and the position you hold today?
I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Houston in Mechanical Technology. During my senior year, the position for a service consultant was posted on the University of Houston Career Web site. I saw the job description and it seemed like an interesting position that would allow me to use my technical background and experience new challenges.
What are some of the things that you do in a day’s work?
I am a member of the Underground Distribution Project Management Group. As a service consultant in the group, I am required to manage the installation of underground electric distribution facilities for subdivisions and coordinate with other utilities - such as cable and telephone - for their installation. During a day’s work, I can go from having rubber boots on, inspecting easements in a subdivision, to sitting at my computer, designing the underground electric distribution for the subdivision with our specialized computer software.
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is being able to completely manage a project, from start to finish. We have the ability to see a barren piece of land and turn it into a neighborhood for families looking for a new home.
What is the most memorable experience you have had while working at CenterPoint Energy?
The most memorable experience I have had working with CenterPoint energy was when hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and many of the survivors were sent to Houston. I was an associate service consultant and, the day after the storm, we were asked to go help distribute supplies to hurricane survivors that were being relocated to an apartment complex in the area. It was a good feeling to know that our company cared enough to allow their employees to lend a hand to people in need. I went home feeling proud to be a CenterPoint Energy employee.
How has CenterPoint Energy helped you move forward in your career?
CenterPoint Energy was my first full-time position after graduating college. In the past 3 years I have learned more information and been exposed to so many different elements of the company. I feel that CenterPoint Energy has given me an opportunity to have a career and learn the skills I need to advance my career in the future.
What advice would you offer a potential employee of CenterPoint Energy?
My advice to anyone applying to be a service consultant would be to keep an open mind and to be ready to learn. After three years, there is a lot more that I need to learn and my knowledge is growing everyday. To be successful in this field, you have to be able to learn quickly and, if you don’t know the answer, you can’t be too proud to ask.
What are some of your hobbies?
Drawing, painting, working out, sports
What kind of music do you enjoy and who is your favorite artist/band/group?
I enjoy listening to R&B and Rap. My favorite artist is Jay-Z
What is something that you can’t live without?
One thing that I cannot live without is my faith in God. My faith has led me to where I am today and, without God in my life, there is no way I would have achieved as much as I have.
