Auditor works with employees to strengthen internal compliance processes

Name: Sharon
Title: Auditor II
Years with company: 3
What educational/employment path led you to CenterPoint Energy and the position you hold today?
I obtained a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Accounting knowing that I wanted to work in the accounting/finance arena, but didn’t want to be an accountant. I was lead to the audit track and was given the opportunity to be an intern in the Audit Services Department. I was the guinea pig - or the first intern hired. Normally, similar previous audit experience is required to be an internal auditor.
What are some of the things that you do in a day’s work?
I conduct interviews with key personnel in order to gain an understanding of a business unit’s processes, gather audit evidence/supporting documentation and ensure, through review of supporting documentation, that a process is working efficiently and that employees are complying with written policies and procedures.
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
An Auditor’s job is unique. We have the ability to work with almost every type of employee here at CNP, from meter readers to the Chief Executive Officer.
What is the most memorable experience you have had while working at CenterPoint Energy?
We had the opportunity to go offsite as a department and do some teambuilding. We played LaserTag. I enjoyed watching our team interact with one another, strategize and just have fun.
How has CenterPoint Energy helped you move forward in your career?
The audit services management team is genuinely concerned about their staff’s development. My manager helps me obtain the skills I need to perform my daily tasks and encourages me to learn transferable skills for opportunities that may become available within CNP.
What advice would you offer a potential employee of CenterPoint Energy?
CNP is a great company to work for! The people are fun, flexible, genuine, and the work is always challenging.
What are some of your hobbies?
My hobbies are reading, dancing, and shopping.
What kind of music do you enjoy and who is your favorite artist/band/group?
I enjoy all types of music - ranging from Country to Alternative to Hip/Hop and R&B. I don’t particularly have a favorite artist, but am currently listening to the following CDs: Sugarland, Usher and WOW Gospel.
What is something that you can’t live without?
Anyone who knows me will answer ... SHOES - Stilettos to be exact.
If you could have a conversation with any person (alive or dead), who would it be?
I would want to talk to Jesus.
